PERSONAL IDENTITY

- We get SOME of our identity from the media.
- In the past, representations were simple. Now, representations are complex.
APPROACHES TO IDENTITY:
- Fluidity - People don't have a fixed identity that is permanent
- Constructed - The mass media construct identities in the representations it offers us. These representation have a subtle influence on audience.
- Negotiated - How do we negotiated the various influences (real vs reel persona).
- Collective - fandom, or the sense of belonging to a sector of a media audience, group identity, personal relationship.

Tristan Tate believes that representations are simple, men are masculine and women are feminine, and base their identity on that (Gender).
1. Fluidity - Tristan along with his brother believes that people do have a fixed identity that is permanent due to their gender.
