COMPONENT 3 - Music Video Research & Development
HERE IS THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF MY MUSIC VIDEO:
MUSIC VIDEO INSPIRATION/RESEARCH
Here With Me, d4vd
David Anthony Burke. (2022) Here With Me. On Here With Me. [audio file]. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ip6cw8gfHHI
The song 'Here With Me' was written and performed by David. The music video was released on the 24th of November 2022 on Youtube. Although David is only 17 years old as of the release of this track, "Here With Me" is an intriguing piece because, in terms of the verses, D4vd is writing from the perspective of someone who has grown "old" with their partner.
Media Language
The song visually illustrates how the music video corresponds with the song lyrics by using brief clips to tell the stories of the young couple, like walking through the beach and having a picnic. The singer had an actor play as his older self along with his partner later on in the music video, further demonstrating how the song's lyrics is about someone who has had a great time with someone and wants to grow old with them till they die. However, near the end of the music video, much of the positivity starts to fade as they can be seen fighting and his partner disappearing, possibly indicating she has passed, which may be the reason for the lyric ""I wish I could live through every memory of you, just one more time before you float off in the wind." All of this may indicate that the song is intended for someone who is currently in a relationship and going through similar feelings and thoughts.
Representations
The music video reveal the pair watching a movie, having a picnic, hugging, going out and enjoying their time. These representations are stereotypes of dating teenagers although this is not always exactly the case for teens, it's a generalization of circumstances when dating with another person.
Target Audience
As for the audience the product would like to target would be teenagers, as for love songs, it would be most common for teenagers to be charmed by the music as, at their age, it would relate as to their feelings for another person, especially when this feeling is stronger. The product attracts teenagers by first using a suitable thumbnail for the music video, showing a young couple having a moment in the beach, and for the rest of the music video, it could relate to the fantasies that they would have with their partner, thus bridging a connection between the music video and their personal lives.
Industry
Modern technology has had a massive influence over this song's success, as it was popularized through TikTok which was a massive trend on the app. David was not only fortunate enough to not advertise his song in the first place, but it was spreading across the internet through influencers and prosumers. The music video looked very simple, not having many visual effects and played off a more simple artistic view, having hidden meanings in each scenes instead of just showing and explaining it to the viewer, which might prove the budget to be not as large as bigger artists, which can be further proven by the artist being a new and growing artist.
Sick Feeling, Boy Pablo
Nicolás Pablo Rivera Muñoz. (2018) Sick Feeling. [Performed by Boy Pablo] On Soy Pablo. [audio file]. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTFDlGv2IWg&list=RDGMEM6ijAnFTG9nX1G-kbWBUCJA&index=15
The song 'Sick Feeling' was written by Nicolás Pablo Rivera Muñoz and performed by the boy band 'Boy Pablo'. The music video was released on the 6th of July 2018 on Youtube. The music video features Pablo, the lead singer, in near a lake in a forest, "performing" the music as a parody.
Media Language
The narrative structure of the music videos starts by showing Pablo's toy guitar in a rocky shallow water, which could be a reference to the end of the music video where he jumps in the lake, it then proceeds to show Pablo fake performing the song with the toy guitar, and singing the song, which is the trend for the rest of the music video. The music video may also have an aspect of nostalgia to teenagers and kids of the 2000's era, which explains the low quality footage, an old school PowerPoint transitions, the toy guitar, which is actually a guitar from the popular "Guitar Hero" game, released in 2005 and his awkward and stiff like movements relating to childhood recordings.
Representations
The music video represents the people who have made these childhood videos in the past, in an attempt to recreate them or to parody. One great example of childhood videos is the "Flow Kingz Feat Lyng - Kygo jo" Youtube video, where we can see young Erling Haaland, the professional Football player making a music video with his friends, which is very similar to Boy Pablo's music video in terms of quality, funny movements and awkwardness.
Target Audience
As the media language and representation states, it is mostly a pastiche to old recordings, more specifically, those in the 2000 - 2010 era, and so I believe that the music video targets its audience by using nostalgia of these times.
Industry
Since the music video is trying to copy the trend of low quality videos and low budget videos, then I assume that the budget for it would be the same. Other than that, the level of editing and the amount of clips there are just goes to show that the budget would be pretty small, further, the band at that time, is a rather small band and so they did not have much budget in the first place.
High School In Jakarta, Niki
Niki Zefanya. (2022) High School in Jakarta. On Nicole. [audio file]. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4CF4km1rUQ
The song High School in Jakarta was written and performed by Niki. The music video was released on the 5th of August 2022 on Youtube. The song is about a teenage relationship and how it finally ended, featuring Niki herself and Peter Adrian Sudarso, with cameos by fellow 88rising acts Warren Hue and Rich Brian.
The music video is the idea of a typical but exaggerated High schooler scenario. Following a love story genre between Niki and Peter during their years together in high school shown by the music video through gradually showing more shots with them together, and showing all the things you would see in a 'heightened reality' high school. This makes the music video more interesting, because what we usually find interesting and fun about high school are the experiences that we've had. This music video can also give a sense of nostalgia to the viewers, especially so to people who've had high school in Jakarta.
Tiger Blood, The Vaccines
Young J. (2011) Tiger Blood. [Performed by The Vaccines] On What did you expect from The Vaccines. [audio file]. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMQi0aTm8Ho
I liked the music video because it gives the feeling of nostalgia, teenage life and wild fun. The music video is done by combining clips of the band on tour, there was no trend or general meaning to each clip except of them having fun which I like. The nostalgia effect can be seen from the grainy video filter over the clips. I feel like a music video can be good as long as it matches the vibe of the song itself, and I think that this music video fits perfectly.
Basket Case, Green Day
Billie Joe Armstrong. (1994) Basket Case. [Performed by Green Day] On Dookie. [audio file]. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUTGr5t3MoY
Green day is a Rock band, which I'm not surprised if it follows the genres trend of making music videos showing them performing. In this case, Green Day conforms this trend, although I don't usually enjoy these types of music videos, the band adds a twist of meaning behind the music video. During the MV, the band group are in a mental hospital, from the nurses and the rapid and sudden movements of the singer can indicate this, which does make sense if you look at the lyrics, this is further proven by the second half of the MV, which makes it seem like you're in a fever dream.
Fluorescent Adolescent, Arctic Monkeys
Alex Turner, Johanna Bennett. (2007) Fluorescent Adolescent. [Performed by Arctic Monkeys] On Favourite Worst Nightmare. [audio file]. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma9I9VBKPiw
The song being an indie rock type of song, the music video does not match the music at all in my opinion, and does not conform to the general genres MV. The music video is more like a movie, there is a plot, it has nothing to do with the band or the music whatsoever and feels random at some times. I'm not really a fan of this music video, even though it's special and unique, it feels mismatched with the music.
Hopeless Wanderer, Mumford & Sons
Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall. (2012) Hopeless Wanderer. [Performed by Mumford & Sons] On Babel. [audio file]. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rId6PKlDXeU
I believe that the music video somewhat conforms to typical Rock genre music video, and I feel like the music video is good because of how obnoxious it is, making it unique to its genre. The music video follows the band playing, which is what most rock bands are doing for their music video, but on this MV it makes it unique and subverts this trend by having comedians as actors, making it a parody. In my opinion this is what makes it enjoyable to the audience and having something unique and out of the ordinary.
Until I Found You, Stephen Sanchez
Stephen Sanchez. (2022) Until I Found You. On Until I Found You. [audio file]. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxldQ9eX2wo
The song 'Until I Found You' was written and performed by Stephen Sanchez. The music video was released on the 29th of June 2022 on Youtube. The love song Until I Found You is dedicated to a girl he once broke up with and later regretted. Georgia, who performs in the chorus with Stephen Sanchez, is the young woman. I like that the setting of the music video plays like it's in the 50's almost like Stephen Sanchez is Elvis Presley looking from his hair, and more so that it shows aspects from the media in the 50's, black and white TV, no VFX and old studio cameras and so giving it it's own unique style.
OKGO BAND MUSIC VIDEOS
OKGO is an American rock band made famous due to their music videos being a viral sensation online, one of which was the music video for their song "Here It Goes Again" made in 2006. Most of the music videos they made were low budget and often in long or single-shot takes, coupled with the band's creative themes, it was what made them unique and sparked their success.
MUSIC VIDEO DEVELOPMENT
We decided to try to shoot the first few scenes of our music video, which would be one of our team members Sammy, in a dark room, with one lighting on the top of his head, holding a year book, this would be the beginning by setting up the setting of the entire music video, it would show the camera panning in towards the yearbook to show the memories, which would be in a montage. There would be other scenes including Sammy later into the music video, but for now we only recorded our concept of the montage and the beginning.
On week 6, the group went to a friends house to shoot the "lonely" scenes. We shot the story intro, the middle scenes and the ending. Dyfan was the man behind the camera, me and andrew were the choreographers/directors, and sammy was the actor.
At this point, we've compiled about 80 - 90% of our shots, most of the clips consisting of montage though.
This is the development section for the music video. This section was led and made by Dyfan who is also our editor for the entire final product of the music video. This was copied from his blog and this is the link: Dyfan
This is the first concepts of the music video:
Here are some inspirations and reference to our music video:
Since our music video is post modern, which means that it is a copy of a copy, we took some inspirations from these music videos and some YouTube videos.
We were inspired to use the 1:1 ratio of the video from this video too make it look more natural and handheld, as we see this video the clips look very not staged and it seems like a direct stereotype to those group of people. We were also inspired to use diegetic sound during the montage which is an element that help to make the music video look more natural, it also allow the audience to hear and relate to the montage as the diegetic sound would bring back memories to them.
Broken Film Effect
This video also inspired us to use the broken film effect to show that our clips are old to send messages to the audiences that these are memories that happened in the long past.
This is the broken film overlay that we used in our music video to convey nostalgic messages towards the audience.
Prototype 1
This is the first result before adding things to the music video.
